When the Past Awakens: A migrant story, a mother’s story – Life Matters

For Helena Kidd, the window into her mother Maria Avraam’s life came unexpectedly when she found a scrappy old notepad in a drawer.

Written in Greek was a deeply personal diary her mother had kept. It documented her mother’s life, from her time in Cyprus as a young woman to becoming an immigrant single mother of three and making her home in Australia.

Through both her mother’s and her own hand, she has written When the Past Awakens, a mother’s pain, which was shortlisted for a Victorian Community History Award in 2020.
