In the middle of the night on March 1st 1942, HMAS Perth, an Australian Navy ship, was sunk by the Japanese Navy off the coast of Java.
Of the 681 men aboard, 328 survived the sinking.
But there was one other survivor, Red Lead, the captain’s cat.
In his latest book, Roland Perry celebrates the courage and loyalty of this extraordinary naval cat who survived shellfire, torpedoes and imprisonment during WWII, and the sailors who made it their mission to protect her.
